I wouldn't set up a separate liability for a credit card. I also don't like to set up a bunch of unnecessary accounts. It may not be as insightful but since it's easy to follow, you'll keep up with it. If you are going to go this route, I'd recommend using a small group of categories, ie phillips & flathead, versus lots of precise categories, ie wood-screw philips, countersunk flathead, 2" drywall flathead, etc. So when I generated reports, one of my biggest expenses didn't have a category but I knew that that was discretionary spending since every other expense had a category. I deliberately left "entertainment" out and I assumed everytime I withdrew cash, I used it for entertainment. I kept it to a few categories just to keep it simple and useful: groceries, auto, household, travel, clothing, utilities and a few more. I used to manually categorize my credit card bill and enter those amounts by hand when I paid the bill.

It was a hard decision but after playing with quicken on xp and watching the upgrade history on the mac, I realized that Intuit was only going to do the minimal amount of work on quicken until a competitor rises. There must be a better way to do this, but I haven't been able to figure it out.įirst, I was a 10+ year quicken user on the mac. Also, my categories don't show up in my credit card account register, so that will make end of year summaries that much more tedious. My question is, is this the best way to do it? When I pay the credit card, I enter the transaction as a transfer from checking to my credit card account in Quicken, but it seems a strange way to do it, since it doesn't show in my Quicken bank account register as a payment, but rather as a transfer. I pay off the credit card every month, so there's no finance charge to keep track of.

So I decided to create credit card accounts in Quicken, so I can download my statements and have the info entered in automatically. But as I use my cards for more and more daily purchases, entering all the line items manually when I receive my statement has become a pain. I have no desire to use it for paying bills, as I do that either on my credit cards' or my bank's sites. I don't care about using it for tracking investments. In the past I've used it effectively as just a checkbook, entering all transactions manually. But now that I'm sort of starting fresh, I'm wondering if I can use Quicken more efficiently.
